Amen, Ase, and Blessed Be!

I'm smiling this morning, because, while reading this post, so many R&B songs from my youth started playing in my head. Time to create a Spotify playlist starting with Diana Ross' "What the World Needs Now..."

Oh yes! What the world needs now is love, for sure. Will be protesting tomorrow, resistance rooted in love....

I will be doing a presentation about Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray at an Episcopal Church in Brooklyn whose rector is gay. Afterwards, we are going to march in the Brooklyn Pride Twilight Parade. Resistance rooted in love and joy.

My current favorite Pauli Murray quote which I have shared before:

"When my brothers try to draw a circle to exclude me, I shall draw a larger circle to include them. Where they speak out for the privileges of a puny group, I shall shout for the rights of all mankind."

Brilliant quote, thanks for sharing! I have not read Pauli Murray closely, can you recommend a starting point?

Walk in strength, beauty and joy today Carla!

Thank you, Jennifer. I had a powerful day in rainy Brooklyn on Saturday. I hope that your loving protest also felt powerful.

A nice introduction to Pauli Murray is an Amazon Prime documentary, "My Name is Pauli Murray." She wrote a substantial autobiography that is a gold mine for historians (born in 1910, she was told by an Episcopal bishop on his deathbed that she was a "child of destiny" and she fulfilled that truth--including becoming the first African American woman ordained as an Episcopal priest at age 67. Her legal mind guided the arguments of two landmark Supreme Court victories for two future Supreme Justices: Thurgood Marshall in Brown v. Board of Ed and Ruth Bader Ginsberg in Reed v. Reed. She also wrote a book of poetry, Dark Testament, that includes one of her most famous lines, "Hope is a song in a weary throat" from the title poem. Song in a Weary Throat is also the title of her autobiography.
