Dream a little dream with me....
Midsummer Greetings, friends.
Before I get to my main reflection today, on the mysterious Unicorn, I have a couple of special invitations that I want to share with you in this dreamy midsummer moment.
1. Join the Joy as the Compass Book Club!
You are heartily welcomed to join me in the Joy as the Compass Book Club, running now through September 20 under the gracious and expert guidance of Edveeje Fairchild, author of the new book Joy as the Compass.
Edveeje created a circle of “wise women mentors” to add a wide range of experience to the club; each week she’ll be sharing a conversation she had with one of these mentors to stir up more discussion of the “seven activist addictions” she talks about in her book, and the “wild remedies” that she suggests.
Full disclosure: I am one of the “wise women mentors,” along with : Clare Dubois, Sarah Drew, Nina Simons, Osprey Orielle Lake, Cynthia Jurs, Sophie Jane Hardy, and Kristi Nelson.
Yes, it’s quite a powerful circle Edveeje has gathered, and we are all looking forward to the deep conversations the book club will no doubt inspire.
It’s all happening in a private Facebook group, which you can join for just $33, all of which will be donated to Treesisters to help reforest our Earth.
2. Come to a Birth Your Truest Story Housewarming Party!
Birth Your Truest Story (BYTS) is moving to a new home on Substack, and co-founder Audrey Kalman and I will be hosting an online celebration to show you around our new digs and share what we have in mind for the next chapter of our perennially warm and welcoming writers’ community.
Our intention is to create even more opportunities for our community members to network, inspire each other and share their voices and visions. That’s been my goal for decades now, in so many of my endeavors, and I’m always excited to find new approaches to making it happen.
BYTS remains free and open to everyone who wants to write and share in good company.
Join us on August 16 at 1 pm Pacific / 4 pm Eastern for a short and sweet party to celebrate all we’ve accomplished in the past years, and to look ahead together at where we want to go next.

In thinking about what else I wanted to share with you today, I was reminded of a post I wrote last summer about the Unicorn in the famous Renaissance tapestry.
To me that jeweled collar symbolizes the modern seductions we have bowed our heads to, considering them a worthy exchange for our freedom.
For example, I can no longer imagine my life without access to wifi, internet and the computers that keep me in touch with all of you.
And yet I must ask, what have I given up in exchange for all the blessings of modern life?
Even as I show off my jewels within the cage of modernity, I want to stay aware of the intricate flowered background, running seamlessly inside and outside of the fence, inviting us to remember how all that we are and everything we have rests on the bounty of Earth.
In this summer of wildfires and floods, of warfare and political corruption, I am grateful for the beauty that Mother Earth so generously shares, and I pledge to use my creativity to amplify and spread that beauty—both inside and outside of the cage of modern existence.
