Here we are, poised between the Old Testament Passover and the New Testament Easter, both describing moments in human history when a miracle gave deeply suffering people something to celebrate. We have also just passed the Libran Full Moon in Aries, a symbology brimming with the righteous struggle for justice.
To be honest, it does not feel like there is much to celebrate right now, as the noxious crew that has taken over the US government continues its plan of bending the country to its will by dint of executive orders, hacking computer systems and mass firings, combined with the targeting of specific people who don’t pass whatever purity tests they decide to apply.
And yet still, at ground level, it is possible to tune into the deeper pulse of Gaia, who sings to us in a million tones that Spring is returning to the northern hemisphere.
The trees are budding, the birds are singing as they nest, the bears are roaming the woods and the foxes purposefully hunting. Small flowers are turning their faces to the Sun.
These comforting signs of Spring remind me that we are in the early days still of the Year of Snake—still in the period of milky eyes and sloughing skin, awaiting the miraculous emergence of the new.
The question becomes: what new version of the Snake of Human History will emerge this time?
Will it be again the Snake of cruelty and domination, the ancient fork-tongued Serpent that has presided over land enclosures, capitalism, industrialization and colonization, using its venomous fangs to acquire and consume the riches of the Earth and all her denizens, without regard or respect for the basic Gaian right of all to flourish?
At this moment in time, we are stuck in the sloughing off stage, where the old skin—the MAGA skin—is clinging stubbornly to power. It’s also looking like the emerging new snake could very well be a Musker, of the high-tech Curtis Yarvin variety, locked into a nihilistic vision of a brave new world that has totally lost its connection to Gaia and her rhythms.
To be honest, these early months of 2025 have been pretty darn depressing.
And yet the only Gaian species that seems fearful and gloomy is homo sapiens.
All the other creatures, not to mention the plant kingdom, the rocks, the waters and winds—they just continue on about their business as best they can. They don’t stand around wringing their metaphorical hands over what might be. They focus on what is and how to live their best life day to day.
It's true that forecasting is one of our human superpowers. It’s also what has made us neurotic as a species.
We can foresee how bad things will get when the US suddenly starts charging a ridiculously high tax on doing business with international trading partners.
We know how bad it will be when there is no Medicaid to help with ordinary medical expenses and no FEMA to help restore towns and watersheds after natural disasters.
We can foresee quite well that a nation that does not fund scientific research—that forces ideological conformity over free inquiry—that seeks to limit the rights of people based on their gender or ethnic heritage or the color of their skin—is going to be a weak, stupid, at-war-with-itself nation.
Yes, we modern humans have our crystal balls, and our new intellectual prostheses, the AI bots, can amp up that doomy-gloomy forecasting considerably.
Be that as it may, the one thing we can be sure of is that Gaia will have the last word.
There is no scenario we can forecast, no matter how bleak, that does not eventually lead to regeneration.
We can be sure that Gaia, in her usual implacable, steady fashion, will take the building blocks she is given and continue her inexorable task of creating flourishing Life.
Whether that future Life looks at all familiar—that is up to what we do now, we alive today on this greening Earth.
I imagine a Passover celebrated in future times when we recall how close we came to a social and environmental disaster caused by the greed, cruelty and indifference of a few toxic, pathologically corrupt men.
I imagine an Easter in the future when we celebrate the re-emergence of gladness and prosperity after the nightmare of a prolonged experience of fear and deprivation caused by the sadistic malice of a destructive, fascist oligarchy.
How will we get there?
By putting the superpower of every human being, imagination, at the service of our collective will to embrace and claim our Gaian right to flourish, which supersedes any human artifice of political structure, ideology or law.
How can you participate in this shift, affecting the nature of the gleaming Snake that will emerge one day from the dull remnants of the old skin that no longer serves us?
By imaginatively anchoring your body in Gaia and opening your mind to the Cosmos, becoming porous to the great atmosphere of the Psyche that bathes us all.
The great metaphysical realm that brought to Earth the miracles commemorated by Passover and Easter is the matrix from which emerges every physical particle as well as every thought, wish and dream.
It is in your power as a human to intentionally tap into this matrix, using the steady drive of all Life on Earth toward flourishing to create your own visions of a thriving world in which humans serve as respectful stewards and co-creators of beauty, harmony and grace.
Get clear on those visions and send them out through every channel available to you. If you are a writer, write. If you belong to a congregation, share via prayer and sermon. If you are a visual artist, paint. Human creativity knows no bounds; we are limited only by our own beliefs as to what is possible.
It is crucial now that we each use the power of our imagination intentionally, trusting that in our super-connected world, the seeds of our visions will pollinate, take root and begin to grow.
Focusing our attention on what horrifies and frightens us only amplifies that darkness.
Without ignoring the dark or pretending it doesn’t exist, we must join with all other Gaians in turning our faces to the Light, knowing that as we do so we are brightening that Light for all Life on Earth.
Yours in the greening of Springtime,
Jennifer

Aloha Jennifer: You received a review copy of my book The Great Physician: Medicinal Poetry for the Anthropocene, but so far, I have not seen a review from you. Now would be the perfect time. The book does exactly what you talk about in this post. It is the spirit of expression and feminine voice that will lead us out of this quagmire. All my posts and organizational leadership is devoted to that, like the upcoming Mother of Medicine series. I would appreciate your review of the book at this perfect time, just on the brink of Earth Day. All proceeds from book sales go to Climate Change & Consciousness, a global network of visionary activists. Thank you.
