War, famine, fires, floods, political corruption…we’re seeing it all these days, at a scale often described as “biblical.” And that’s just the headlines—dig a little deeper and the story gets worse, with the sixth great extinction of species well underway, global heating melting the polar caps, the oceans warmer than they’ve been in recorded history.
Yeah, we’re living through some crazy times.
No wonder there’s an opioid epidemic, and rates of alcoholism are on the rise. No wonder so many people prefer to play video games, rather than face reality.
Checking out can feel like the best option, under such a rushing tide of doom and gloom.
I’m here to tell you about three ways I’ve found to stay centered, grounded and energetic despite the crushing weight of bad news.
1. Stay physically active, preferably outdoors in nature.
2. Tap into your creativity.
3. Connect with like-minded people who are doing this too.
And if you can deploy all three of these tactics at once, as I do with my Riding & Writing trips, the synergy is remarkable!
Come ride & write with me!
I’ll be leading a Riding & Writing trip on Faial Island in the Azores this January, which will be the perfect antidote to the winter blahs (and in the US, the sure-to-be-wild aftermath of the presidential elections). Please check it out and join me!
Come write with me live online!
And this fall, channel whatever strong emotions you’re experiencing about life in this turbulent present moment into powerful writing about the better future that could be, with my new Writing to Right the World 4-session series of live online classes.
Work with a group of likeminded people to get your vision of a better world out on paper, and then out into the world.
Remember that every positive step forward in human history happened first as a glimmer in someone’s mind’s eye.
If we can dream it, we can make it happen, but we have to nurture and grow our dreams first, and writing is such a good way to do just that.
I’ll be waiting for you in the zoom room, 6 pm Eastern on Monday September 30, for the first of our Writing to Right the World sessions.
And I’ll meet you on Faial Island, Azores, for a great week of Riding & Writing in January 2025!
Yours in creative resistance,
Jennifer

Writing workshops you can count on to stimulate your creative spirit!
In my writing workshops, whether in-person or online, you get the benefit of my decades of teaching lively small-group, discussion-based college literature and writing classes.
My classes are interactive and thought-provoking, cultivating writing that is intuitive, generative and organic—emerging from within rather than based on an artificial structure imposed from without.
In my writers’ circles, I create a warm, welcoming atmosphere and carefully structured opportunities for instructor and peer feedback that is non-evaluative but highly effective and productive. Sharing is encouraged but always optional, and confidentiality is a must.
My students are often surprised at how much they are able to produce in my workshops, and how deeply they are able to tap their own inner reservoirs of stories, images and metaphors. Try it and see for yourself!

Friends, it’s my pleasure and my passion to support you as we stretch towards living our lives creatively and to the fullest.
The motto of my author consulting business is “Writing to Right the World,” and the motto of my book publishing business, Green Fire Press, is “Books that Make the World Better.”
If these intentions resonate with you and you are working on a book, or have one in mind, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
Supporting creative people bring their work more strongly out into the world is one way I try to make the world better.
