Beware cement shoes!
Educators must resist the normalization of a "post-truth" era
Since watching the Vice Presidential debate the other night, I have been disturbed by the contrast between the mega-lies of MAGAworld, vs the mild mistruth confessed to by Tim Walz, which has been pounced on by the rightwing media.
It made me reflect that I was wrong to give up teaching journalism a while back—a decision I took when it seemed that the field was being totally swallowed up by the twin-headed hydra of social media and corporate media.
People today, of all ages, need education on how to think for themselves and discern truth from falsehood. As a society, we need to reaffirm the value of integrity.
In that vein, I am sharing some “writing to right the world” I posted to my Spirit of Education Substack today.

My classes are interactive and thought-provoking, cultivating writing that is intuitive, generative and organic—emerging from within rather than based on an artificial structure imposed from without.
In my writers’ circles, I create a warm, welcoming atmosphere and carefully structured opportunities for instructor and peer feedback that is non-evaluative but highly effective and productive. Sharing is encouraged but always optional, and confidentiality is a must.
My students are often surprised at how much they are able to produce in my workshops, and how deeply they are able to tap their own inner reservoirs of stories, images and metaphors. Try it and see for yourself!
